Jakarta. In an environmentally conscious move, the Government of Lampung Province, Indonesia, has revoked a Governor's Regulation pertaining to the harvest method of burning sugarcane fields. This decision aligns with concerns over environmental damage.

The revocation follows a Supreme Court verdict, No. 1P/HUM/2024, which mandated the Governor of Lampung to withdraw the controversial Governor's Regulation No. 33/2020 on the Management of Harvesting and Productivity of Sugarcane Plants, as amended by Governor's Regulation No. 19 of 2023. This regulation had been deemed beneficial to sugarcane plantation companies at the expense of the environment.

The announcement was made by the Secretary of Lampung Province, Fahrizal Darminto, in Bandar Lampung, Tuesday (21/5), quoted by Antara, highlighting the immediate effect of the Supreme Court's binding and final ruling.

The Supreme Court's decision recognizes the detrimental impact of burning sugarcane on the environment, a stance supported by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK). Burning is cited as causing significant harm through the release of greenhouse gas emissions, environmental degradation and pollution, and posing health hazards to the public from smoke and dust particles.

Close monitoring by the KLHK has revealed that certain sugarcane plantations in Lampung have contributed to land fires, indicating the severity of the practice. Data from 2021 showed that nearly 5,469.38 hectares of land were burned by two sugarcane companies, a figure that dramatically increased to 14,492.64 hectares in 2023.

This decisive action reflects a growing commitment to environmental protection and sustainable agricultural practices within the region.
